Light gives the world we observe its substance; without light we live in the dark. Without light, artistic activities and creative endeavour, on a visual plane, have no meaning for the sighted person. The light we incorporate in a sculpture gives it new meaning in the dark hours of the day. Light lends a brilliance to imagery that no painter can achieve with just paint alone. For certain artistic situations light becomes a medium in its own right enhancing the work, its colour and form, creating possibilities of time and movement that go beyond mere illumination, and having the ability to fulfil the artist’s idea alone, within its own specific limitations.
Light was always an element to be considered in designing sculpture for public spaces, revealing a daytime und nighttime awareness of the artwork.
