Throughout my artistic development I have always been fascinated with printmaking. On the one hand working within the technical parameters and required skills of each method of making prints, from the simple stamp to the complexity of a coloured etching and more recently using the computer to produce original artistic prints. Each technique offers the opportunity to experiment and develop new ideas yet the overriding impulse is the striving for artistic expression. Over many years of trial and error and exploring various methods of printmaking, the intaglio method became the preferred technique, from drypoint to multiple plate etchings incorporating all the ways of working the plates at my disposal. Intaglio briefly described, is the making of marks or shallow indentions in a copper plate that when rubbed with ink retain the ink according to the marks made. When passed through a press the plates offset the ink onto the appropriately prepared paper. A colored print either incorporates more than one ink color or the consecutive printing from more than one plate, usually three with the basic colors yellow, red and blue from which the full spectrum of colors can be mixed.
Artists have always embraced new technologies, exploring new creative possibilities to give form to artistic expression. The digital medium and constantly developing computer software, enabling graphic artists to achieve amazing works, is no exception. Each method has its own form of expression as does each artist form his own visual language.
